About the trip
Happy Donkeys in collaboration with Velia Travel, offer a unique journey.
Get to know the most mysterious Bulgarian mountain range – the Rhodopes, from Devin to the Rocky Bridges Refuge. During this 7-day tour, our donkeys will carry your backpack and keep company with you along the mountain trails.
The Rhodope Mountains are home to the legendary singer Orpheus, to the ancient Thracians, to monasteries and tiny villages nestled in the mountains, to wild gorges and ravines, canyons and caves. Our tour will take us along wild donkey trails and dirt roads. We will stop by all natural and historical phenomena along the way – Yagodina Cave, the Eagle’s Eye observation deck, Trigrad, Mount Orpheus, as well as several villages (Borino, Mugla, Shiroka Laka) and the Bachkovo Monastery. Our last stop is the city of Plovdiv.
Important: The route is designed around an altitude of 1300-1500 m and reaches a little over 2000 m at Mount Orpheus. We walk on foot accompanied by the donkeys who carry our bags. This itinerary is without technical difficulties, with stages of about 20 km and an average difference in altitude of about 600 m (in total). The overnight stays are in hotels, cottages, and refuges that provide dinner and breakfast. Lunches are packed and/or in restaurants along the way.
