Our Donkeys

Meet our happy donkeys: Albano, Gastone, Gianni, Mario, Massimo, Gioacchino, Bortolo, Panna Cotta, Italo, Emilia, Romagna, Felicita, Ghergana, and Romina. Each of them has its character and hidden passions:

Romina

Character: She is quiet and calm, but also clever. From time to time, she manages to escape the fence and take a walk outside, but she never goes too far. Hidden passions: She likes fire, smoke, and dust bathing.

Ghergana

Character: She is extremely kind and good-natured. She was the last to join the family but quickly made friends with the other donkeys. Yet, she enjoys the company of people the most. Hidden passions: She has a green thumb and likes to take care of our garden.

Mario

Character: He is one of our two oldest donkeys, strong and long-haired. He is very kind and a true gentleman – you can often see him helping Ghergana with the garden work.

Italo

Character: He is one of the two oldest donkeys in the family, slow and quiet.

Panna Cotta

Character: The white plush donkey who melts the hearts of children and adults alike is so loveable! He loves being massaged, groomed, hugged, and kissed. Hidden passions: He loves to play with our dog Buk.

Gastone

Character: He is bold and wilful but also playful. He loves to race and his favorite rival is his friend Panna Cotta. Hidden passions: He adores music and he even sings. It’s not by chance that his forelock reminds of Elvis’s.

Albano

Character: The leader of the family is tough but fair. He loves people and is well behaved. He enjoys long walks. Hidden passions: He likes Romagna and he is often in conflict with Gianni, her other admirer, because he is jealous.

Emilia

Character: She looks like an Asian princess – beautiful and mysterious, commanding respect from the others. Her kind nature suddenly disappears when we lay the table – very bad for the donkey who happens to be right next to her. Hidden passions: She likes to rest after lunch.

Romagna

Character: She is tall and pretty, with silver spots. Noble Romagna is confident and a bit haughty. She has a group of admirers and a true friend in the face of Felicità who follows her everywhere.

Felicità

Character: Felicità is tiny and shy. All the time she follows her friend Romagna.

Gioacchino

Character: He is big and good-natured, craving attention but quite shy. It was a long time before he trusted us. If he doesn’t get attention, he comes and asks for it gently by pushing you with his soft muzzle.

Gianni

Character: He is short but strong and brave. Our farm’s Casanova is madly in love with princess Romagna.

Bortolo

Character: He is open-minded and curious about people. He is always the first to meet our guests which was the reason why we have assigned him the role of a doorkeeper. He loves being caressed and groomed. Hidden passions: He loves to play by pushing you with his muzzle.

Massimo

Character: He is a black donkey, both by color and character. He doesn’t like to be touched or caressed but he is dedicated to showing his best during our hikes.

Aren’t they too many?

They can’t be too many – in a home full of love, there is room for everyone!

Most of these donkeys share the same fate – their owners didn’t take good care of them or they were destined to be killed for meat.

Since they came at Happy Donkeys, these donkeys do live la dolce vita. Their special annual treatment program includes pedicure once in three months, vaccinations, treatment against parasites, and donkey ears massages (our cat Leo is in charge of the latter). But most of all, they get a lot of attention and love.

Dogs, Cats, and Hens

Meet the other hosts in our home.

Buk is a dog by passport and a donkey by nature. He loves dust bathing, eats donkey delicacies such as hay, carrots, and apples – and even cotton thistle. His curiosity often brings donkey kicks to his freckled nose when he tries our donkeys’ immense patience.

Tobi is a puppy who lives in the house with our four cats that we saved from the street – Leopold (who sometimes thinks he is a dog and barks), Miki, Lili, and Lisa.

Not to mention our feathered friends starting with Madame Кокò and her kids – now grown-up hens. A couple of swallow families nest in our windows.

The only thing missing is a stork family. We have set a nest platform and we believe that one day our storks will come and settle down here.
